South Yorkshire Police Crime Commissioner Funding

The Friends of the Trans Pennine Trail secured funding from the South Yorkshire Police Crime Commissioner’s Community Grants Scheme to design and install signs that inform users of the Trail how to report illegal usage on public rights of way across South Yorkshire. The funding has allowed the signs to be designed, printed and distributed. 860 signs will be placed across Barnsley, Doncaster, Sheffield and Rotherham.

On Thursday 14th March, the Trans Pennine Trail (TPT) national office went to Far Field Lane, Barnsley to talk to Dr Alan Billings, Police and Crime Commissioner, about the project that the Friends of the Trans Pennine Trail have been carrying out to help Barnsley Council and South Yorkshire Police to crack down on illegal motorbike and quad use on the Trans Pennine Trail (also National Cycle Network) and other rights of way. Cllr John Wilson, Chair of the Trans Pennine Trail, Cllr Kevin Osborne, Barnsley Public Rights of Way Rangers, South Yorkshire Police Off Road Team also joined them.

Commenting on the visit, Dr Billings said: “I’m always pleased to support initiatives through my Community Grants Scheme and enjoy seeing the outcomes provided by our funding.

“The Trans Pennine Trail stretches 215 miles across the country and can often be blighted by illegal off-road biking, litter and anti-social behaviour. The installation of signage along the Trail through South Yorkshire will provide members of the public with guidance on how to report issues to South Yorkshire Police.”

It is very important that every case of illegal activity is reported and recorded on the South Yorkshire Police database to help the off-road team collect evidence and prioritise problem areas.
