Our Vice Chair meets SYMCA

The Trans Pennine Trail (TPT) is a beacon of sustainable transport, weaving through the heart of communities and fostering a spirit of collaboration among all stakeholders. This week I was proud as both a Doncaster Councillor and as Vice Chair of the Trans Pennine Trail Partnership to join the celebrations of the resurfacing and widening of a two-mile section between Harlington and Mexborough. This £430,000 upgrade, funded by the Department of Transport, not only improved the Trail’s accessibility but also its environmental footprint, thanks to a new permeable hard surface for better drainage, improved wayfinding, and new seating.

.The project was a testament to the close working relationship between the TPT partnership, Doncaster Council, and Sustrans. Their joint efforts have made the Trail more inclusive, accommodating people with mobility aids, larger cycles, or those riding horses, particularly during the winter months when the path was previously prone to flooding.

Engagement with the local community has been a cornerstone of the TPT’s success. Pupils from Barnburgh Primary School contributed to the project by creating posters on sharing the Trail responsibly, which have now been installed along the route, adding a personal touch to the Trail’s narrative.

This initiative is part of a broader effort to secure a sustainable future for the TPT in Doncaster, ensuring it remains a valuable asset for the community and visitors alike. The Trail is more than a path; it’s a lifeline that connects people, supports local economies, and promotes a healthier, more sustainable way of life.

The celebration of the Trail’s improvements was graced by the presence of South Yorkshire Mayor, Oliver Coppard, and the South Yorkshire Active Travel Commissioner Ed Clancy. Their participation in the wildflower planting session and tree identification walk underscored the importance of community involvement and environmental stewardship.

The TPT’s story is one of unity, resilience, and forward-thinking. It’s a narrative that continues to evolve, shaped by the hands of those who cherish it and the wheels that roll upon it. As we look to the future, the TPT stands as a shining example of what can be achieved when we work together for the common good. Let’s continue to tread this path of progress, nurturing the bonds that make our journey worthwhile.
