Discover the Joys of Walking with Doncaster Ramblers
Welcome to our blog, where we delve into the rich history of the Doncaster Ramblers, part of the nationwide Ramblers Association, and explore the incredible benefits of walking for both mental and physical health.
Walking is one of the simplest yet most effective ways to enhance well-being, and the Doncaster Ramblers are dedicated to promoting and supporting this pleasurable activity. With a vibrant community and a variety of walks that cater to all levels of fitness and experience, the Doncaster Ramblers offer an excellent opportunity to improve both mental and physical health while enjoying the beauty of nature.
Who Are the Doncaster Ramblers?
The Doncaster Ramblers, part of the nationwide Ramblers Association, have been dedicated to promoting the pleasures of walking and looking after the countryside since their establishment in 1970. They organise weekly walks that range from leisurely strolls to more challenging hikes, ensuring there’s something for everyone. Their walking programme includes local walks, some of which cover the Trans Pennine Trail, providing an excellent opportunity to explore the beautiful landscapes of Doncaster and its surroundings. Despite the lack of records from the early years, the fundamental aims of providing regular walks and maintaining footpaths remain the same today.
The History of Doncaster Ramblers
Since launching their first website in July 2007, the Doncaster Ramblers have made significant strides in promoting the joys of walking. The website, updated the following year, enabled them to publish their walks online, sparking discussions about the necessity of a printed programme. The onset of COVID-19 solidified the decision to cease producing printed programmes and focus solely on online promotion.
From the early days, the group has been organising walks of about 10 miles on Tuesdays and Saturdays, initially accompanied by a biannual printed programme. In 2005, they introduced shorter Thursday walks, which have since evolved into weekly events. These local walks offer an excellent introduction to the world of rambling.
Since 2009, approximately 20 dedicated members have been monitoring the state of the paths, ensuring each path is checked annually. A maintenance team of about 20 volunteers assists the Council in clearing vegetation and repairing or replacing stiles. The Heron Way, a 30-mile walk around Doncaster, was introduced in 2009 and formally opened by Caroline Flint MP.
In 2017, the Doncaster Ramblers embarked on their first sponsored ramble for BBC’s Countryfile, raising funds for Children In Need. This initiative has continued, with several sponsored rambles raising nearly £2000. In 2018, they began offering walks for Doncaster Carers, providing a perfect opportunity for carers to take a break from their responsibilities and socialize.
The group organised a walking festival in May – June 2018, featuring 27 walks over a nine-day period during a school holiday. Volunteer leaders curated interesting walks, some with specific themes like bees, tree recognition, map-reading, and history.
The Doncaster Group of the Ramblers continues to evolve, meeting the needs of its members and attracting new enthusiasts to the joys of walking in the beautiful countryside

- Cardiovascular Health: Walking is excellent for heart health. It helps lower cholesterol and blood pressure, improving cardiovascular function and reducing the risk of heart disease.
- Weight Management: Walking burns calories and helps maintain a healthy weight. It is a simple and effective way to stay fit.
- Joint Health: Walking strengthens bones and keeps joints flexible, which is particularly beneficial for those with arthritis or joint pain. It helps lubricate joints and strengthens the muscles that support them.
