Burn Airfield Improvement Project

The Burn Airfield Improvement Project was secured through funding from the TPT national office, North Yorkshire County Council and the Friends of the Trans Pennine Trail (via funding from Sport England). This section of the TPT had been subject to numerous complaints from local users, community groups, councillors and long-distance users due to recurrent flooding. The funding has been able to provide a fully accessible surfaced route as well as welcome additions including benches, activity posts, information boards and a soundbox.

Overview Burn Project Area

Improvements

Surface improvements - before the improvements were implemented this section of route was extremely potted and regularly under water (even in the Summer months!). Interim remedial work had taken place to try to alleviate some of the issues but full construction work was required.
Thanks to the funding secured North Yorkshire were able to resurface the whole route.
Ten activity posts complete with rubbings about the history of the airfield and things you might see when you are on the route (Remember to bring paper and pencils/crayons!)
Gateways modified to improve accessibility.
IMAGES COMING SOON!
Accessible seating - we have installed benches and picnic tables along the route to allow users to enjoy the views and enjoy a rest or a bite to eat.
Information Boards - the history of the site was an important feature for this project and we wanted to honour this. You can find two information boards showcasing RAF Burn Historic Airfield and also RAF Burn Airfield Home of the 578 Squadron.
Soundbox - take a step back in time and hear the sounds of the airfield
