Take a Seat on the Trans Pennine Trail
The Take a Seat project is our ongoing initiative to map every seat, bench, resting point, and picnic table along the Trans Pennine Trail. Inspired by the Centre for Ageing Better’s mission to create more age friendly, accessible outdoor spaces, this project helps to make the Trail easier to enjoy for everyone.
Thanks to the incredible effort of our volunteers, we are building a clear and trusted picture of where people can stop, rest, and enjoy a moment of calm and take in their surroundings.
Why Mapping Seat Matter
- Supporting Accessible Trail Use
For many people, especially older adults, those with health conditions, or anyone building confidence outdoors – knowing there are places to rest can make all the difference. Having reliable information helps people plan routes that feel achievable and enjoyable. - Encouraging More People to Get Outdoors
Whether you’re walking, wheeling, riding or cycling, journeys feel more welcoming when there are places to stop along the way. By making rest points easier to find, we’re helping more people feel confident to get out and explore. - Creating More Inclusive Communities
Take a Seat highlights how features can have a big impact. Something as simple as a bench can open up the Trail to more people and give someone the confidence to take the journey. The project also celebrates the work of councils, community groups, charities and individuals who help make the Trail a more welcoming place.
Explore the Live Seat Map
Our interactive map shows the seat seat locations that have been mapped so far across the Trail, and includes a photo and their what3words location to help you find them easily and understand what to expect when you arrive.

Supported by our partners
We’re grateful to Foundation Derbyshire, through the Friends of the Trans Pennine Trail, for their funding support that is helping us grow and develop the Take a Seat project.
Thank You to Our Volunteers
This project is powered by our volunteers who have:
- walked and cycled sections of the Trail
- photographed benches and rest points
- logged what3words locations
- checked, verified, and updated information
They have also been the voice of the project – helping to spread the word about Take a Seat and what we’re working to achieve with local users, communities and Trail visitors.
Their dedication is helping to make the Trail more accessible welcoming and enjoyable for everyone. We are extremely grateful for their time, commitment and continued support.
Get involved
The Take a Seat map is a work in progress, and we’re building it together with the help of our amazing volunteers, local groups and funding partners to fill the gaps.
Together, we’re helping make the Trans Pennine Trail a place where everyone can feel confident to explore at their own pace.
