NEW EXTENSION TO THE TRANS PENNINE TRAIL - PENISTONE TO KIRKBURTON

News- Kirkburton Offically Opened!

The official opening ceremony of the new section Trans Pennine Trail, from Penistone to Kirkburton, took place on Tuesday 16th October 2012.  This work has been made possible with the aid of funding from EPIP (East Peak Innovation Partnership, http://www.epip.org.uk/).  The project has resulted in two routes which emerge from Kirkburton and join the Trail at Penistone; one of the routes is an on-road option and the other is an off-road option.

The route was officially opened by the Chair of the Trans Pennine Trail Members Steering Group, Councillor Gilby, Councillor Bolt from Kirklees and Councillor Hand-Davis from Barnsley.

The on-road option travels from Kirkburton through Stocksmoor, Shepley, Haddingley and Royd Moor and joins the Trail at Millhouse Green.  This route is primarily for cyclists but can also be used by walkers.

The off-road route is slightly longer and travels from Kirkburton, Shelley, Shepley, Cumberworth Common, Denby Dale, Upper Denby, Ingbirchworth, Royd Moor and joins the Trail at Thurlstone.  This route is for walkers, cyclists and equestrians.

This project offers a wonderful opportunity to bring visitors from Kirklees onto the Trail and provide a route for our existing Trail users to travel to the delights of Kirkburton, through some wonderful villages along the way.
