Staveley, Chesterfield

Two sections of the Trans Pennine Trail at Staveley in Derbyshire will be closed for the period of 2 years from April 2007, to allow for the construction of the new Staveley Northern Loop road (A6197).  These sections will be closed to all users.

Routes are described heading in a Northerly direction. Southerly routes are just a reverse of the description.

Canal towpath to Beighton-Staveley Trail

Turn right at the end of Chesterfield Canal Trust's recent bridge footing works and go up the tarmac footpath (Constitution Hill).

CYCLISTS: to avoid lengthy complicated alternatives we are directing cyclists along Constitution Hill footpath. Please dismount for this stretch (approx. 150 yards).

At the top of Constitution Hill footpath go straight ahead and join Church Street and proceed with the church on your left. At the mini-roundabout turn left onto Duke Street (A619). Please note that Duke Street is a busy road and families with young children or inexperienced cyclist should walk this section which runs for about 500m.

At Duke Street roundabout (heavy traffic!) take the ahead/slightly left junction to Hall Lane then turn immediately right on to Eckington Road (B6053). You should pass Staveley Police Station on your right.

Proceed along Eckington Road for approximately a third of a mile. This takes you over the heart of the new road construction so there may be unforeseen alterations and diversions in this area.

After passing over the rail bridge turn right onto Franklyn Drive. The TPT access furniture (equestrian stile and A-frame) at the junction of Franklyn Drive/Eckington Road will take you down the side of the road works site perimeter fence*.

Bear left and re-join the TPT.

*STOP PRESS (16/08/07): We are finding that occasional works are being required on the path from Franklyn Drive to the Trail with resultant temporary closure. We have asked the contractors to sign on site to indicate this. When this path is closed the route to join the TPT is as follows:

From Duke Street roundabout take the 2nd exit onto the A619 (for Worksop & M1) instead of Eckington Road and cross the bridge and turn left onto Pullman Close to re-join the trail.

Arkwright Line (Inkersall / West Wood) to Beighton-Staveley Trail

The TPT will be closed just south of Ireland Close cul-de-sac access point, but no access to diversion routes exist beyond Inkersall Road car park.

Turn right onto path for Poolsbrook Country Park and follow the track as it curves to the left. At the cross roads carry straight on and proceed downhill towards the visitor centre.

Fork left away from the Visitor Centre and head towards the park vehicle access with the lake on your right.

Pass the park access vehicle height barrier and follow the road to the T-junction. Turn right onto Meadows Drive.

At the T-junction turn left into Fan Road. Follow Fan Road to its junction with Lowgates Road (A619) passing the junction with Cemetery Lane and crossing the roundabout with Ireland Close. Pavement continuity alternates between opposite sides of the road. Road works site traffic will be using Fan Road so proceed with caution.

Turn left onto Lowgates Road (A619 - heavy traffic!) opposite the Speedwell Arms. We strongly recommend that you use the pelican crossing to get to the other side of the road. Turn left from the pelican crossing.

Turn right onto Pullman Close and follow it around as it first turns to the left and then to the right.

Pass the end of the cul-de-sac and re-join the TPT through the wooden gate.

PLEASE NOTE: NEITHER OF THESE ROUTES IS SUITABLE FOR HORSE RIDERS AND UNFORTUNATELY NO SUITABLE ALTERNATIVES EXIST.

Blue diversion signs will be found on route attached to lamp posts, but you should not rely on these alone as they tend to go missing or get turned. Diversion maps will also be found on site or copies can be picked up from Tapton Lock Visitor Centre.
