Current Diversions and Closures - Central
Details of problems affecting the coast to coast route between Penistone and RSPB Old Moor and on the north-south Leeds to Chesterfield route.
Chesterfield
Staveley - There is a 100m section of the Trail to the north of Hall Lane in Staveley which currently has a temporary surface. This surface is sometimes difficult to negotiate in wet conditions, so Trail users please be aware of this section. This is a temporary situation due to the forthcoming works to create a new canal basin for the Chesterfield Canal on this site. The Trail will be closed and diverted during the canal basin works and this will be advertised on site. A new, fully re-surfaced section of Trail should be created as part of the canal basin works and should be made available to all users as soon as practically possible. Updated 20th April 2010
Leeds
Flood Damage - Woodlesford - The flooding in June 2007 caused extensive damage to the steel pilings of the nearby Aire-Calder Canal just south of Woodlesford Locks and washed out the towpath which the TPT follows here. This has resulted in British Waterways having to temporarily close this off this section (as far as Swillington Bridge) on safety grounds whilst large scale repair works are awaited.
We have been informed by BW that unfortunately these works are now unlikely to take place for some time (we are continuing to lobby for urgent repairs). The safest diversion route to follow here is therefore to cross Woodlesford Lock by the lock gates and then continue south along the opposite (West side) towpath all the way down to Fleet Lane moorings where you can rejoin the Trail after it crosses the canal.
If journeying north, leave the access road around the moorings just before Fleet Lane Bridge by going underneath instead of over it, then following the grassy towpath (which is the TPT alternative Walking Route ) all the way to Woodlesford Lock. Here you can then either cross the lock gates to re-join the Trail towards Leeds or continue northwards along the BW access road as far as Fishpond Locks and cross over the lock gates there. Updated July 2010
Knowsthorpe - There is a collapsing sectopm of wooden boardwalk which carries the Trail around Old Mill Lane canal basin just before the Knostrop Flood Lock footbridge. The fault is with one of the decking bearer beams which has partly rotted, causing one of the decking sections to slip down at one end a few inches. It is still passable with care and it is hoped a temporary repair can be carried out soon. Updated 28 July 2010
Barnsley
Penistone - Works are underway in Penistone for the new Tesco development. At present equestrian parking has been relocated through the building site on the left hand side (please ask any of the construction team on site and they will direct you). In a few weeks the TPT car park should be available abeit on a temporary access route to the right before you get to the row of terraced houses and the building site. This will be signed when it is ready. However, there will still be a large amount of construction traffic in the vicinity and at present the horses will need to cross the construction site from the temporary car park so you may wish to visit different sections of the Trail. Alternative parking is available at Dunford Bridge , Cote Green Stables at Wortley or Havelands Lane , Worsborough to access the Trail in different locations. Updated 4th May 2010
Cudworth and West Green Bypass - work started on the construction of this road scheme on 10th November 2008 and will last for 18 months. This will disrupt the TPT route on Far Field Lane (between Cudworth and Royston) which will be crossed by the bypass. Contractors have been instructed that the TPT route must be maintained throughout the work, although it will be necessary to divert the route as work progresses. Please look out for local diversions and further updates will appear here as work progresses.
National Grid Works at Dunford Bridge and Woodhead - works have started at both Dunford bridge and Woodhead to replace the existing high voltage cables that run through Woodhead Tunnels. Work to lay the concrete road through the tunnel started on 12th October and will last for approximately 5 weeks. During this phase of the works there will be significant numbers of lorry movements to and from the tunnel. A one-way system is in operation with vehilce accessing the tunnel at Woodhead and exiting the tunnel at Dunford Bridge car park. This will cause some disruption for Trail users from vehicle movements for deliveries to site affecting the TPT car park at Dunford Bridge and the area around the Woodhead as follows:Dunford Bridge - the route and the Dunford Bridge car park will remain open throughout this period, with lorries exiting the tunnel under the direction of a banksman. Later in the works there may be occasional disruption to car parking at Dunford Bridge due to deliveries of cable drums. More detailed information on these will be posted as the project progresses.
Woodhead - the route remains open through the Woodhead station area but has been diverted slightly with a section fenced off for Trail users between the A628 and approximately 150m beyond the former Woodhead station. Horse riders need to use a short section of the walking and cycling route before crossing back to the horse route. All vehicles accessing the tunnel from the A628 will be under the direction of a banksmen. Later in the works there may be occassional further disruption as heavy equipment accesses to connect the new cables to the overhead transmission wires. More detailed information on these will be posted as the project progresses. Updated 15th October 2009
Sheffield

There is a dip in the TPT adjacent to
Barrow Road - Meadowhall Road - Works underway As a result of a junction scheme being undertaken by Sheffield City Council: Meadowhall Road - A through route will be maintained, but will have restricted widths at times and will be on temporary surfaces at times. Barrow Road - Adjacent to the Unite premises - will have restricted width and temporary surfaces at times. On the other side adjacent to the Travelodge, the footway will be closed temporarily. Pedestrians and cyclists will need to cross to the other footway at 1) via the over bridge and coming back down via the Park and Ride car park 2) near traffic lights at the entrance to the park and ride side. Anticipated end date of August 2010.
