Places on the Trail : Central

The central area of the Trans Pennine Trail (TPT) runs from the town of Penistone at the eastern foot of the Pennines to the village of Sprotbrough near Doncaster and the north/south section of the TPT between the bustling city of Leeds and the Derbyshire town of Chesterfield. It covers an amazing range of sights and scenes as the TPT passes through countryside, towns and cities of the North of England, on historic railways and canals, riverside paths and woodland bridleways.

Coast to Coast

Travelling east from Penistone, for the most direct route you'll leave the railway at Oxspring and follow the old pack horse way at Willow Lane and the railway path along the Dove Valley. After passing Worsbrough Country Park you can head north to Barnsley or continue (on the coast to coast route) to Bolton upon Dearne and eventually Sprotbrough. There is a lot to see on the way, with lakes and wildlife at Old Moor Wetland Centre and Wath, looking to the future at the environmental theme park - Earth Centre or to the past at Conisbrough Castle. From Sprotbrough you can take a boat trip and enjoy dramatic views of the old railway viaduct spanning the Don Gorge nearby.

TPT North

The trail links into Barnsley on railway paths, or continues north on lanes and the scenic Barnsley Canal towards Wakefield. The TPT passes Anglers Country Park and on through the beautiful conservation area of Heath. After Stanley Ferry boating marina the railway path from Bottom Boat eventually links onto several miles of peaceful paths along the River Aire and the Aire Calder Navigation canal. The TPT emerges in Leeds alongside the Royal Armouries - just one of the many cultural attractions to be found in this vibrant city.

TPT South

There are different options for travelling south depending at which point you leave the coast to coast section of the TPT. The Elsecar Greenway, passes through Elsecar Industrial Heritage Centre, or take the Timberland Trail via the village of Wortley. A choice of three routes via Wharncliffe Woods, historic Wentworth estate or Sheffield's Forest Loop (through Westwood Country Park and Greno Wood) all lead you to either Rotherham or Sheffield passing Meadowhall on the way. The route to Rotherham partly follows the River Don and takes in the Magna centre along the way. For Sheffield you'll travel the Five Weirs Walk which takes the TPT into the heart of Sheffield along the city's waterways. All routes eventually lead to Rother Valley Country Park complete with lakes and water sports. A disused railway path south from here and now you're in Derbyshire on the Beighton - Staveley section of the TPT. After Renishaw you'll have one last dilemma on the journey to Chesterfield - follow the Chesterfield Canal towpath, passing the visitor centre at Tapton Lock, or the alternative route using a railway path and bridleways via Inkersall? Either way you'll be rewarded when you finally reach Chesterfield with the view of the town's amazing crooked spire church amongst other gems!
