Top Tips for a Trans Pennine Trail Event
- Elect
an organiser/committee and undertake an investigative visit of the
areas/stretches to be used to finalise your route, take account of
barriers and calculate the time it will take
- Get permission to hold
your event from the landowner or Local Council Highway Authority, contact
the TPT Office for help. Contact the Police
as you may need their permission if its on road
- Decide / estimate how many
people will take part and what type of user (e.g. cyclists, walkers,
horseriders, runners)
- Sort out where will participants meet up and where
they start. Research how to get to the event using public transport,
and if you need parking
nominate stewards to supervise this. Consider parking facilities for horseboxes,
and users with mobility aids.
- Allocate a qualified First Aider, and also
leaders with maps and draw up emergency guidelines. Mobile phones are
advised, as is a vehicle for
use in emergencies.
- Check your group’s insurance – are you insured
to organise an activity? If you include unaccompanied children make sure
you get a
letter of consent from their parents.
- Think about shelter, toilet stops
and refreshment stops/supplies en route.
- Publicise your event - let
the TPT office know so it can be posted on the Website. Remember to
include Trans Pennine Trail and the logo
if possible
on your event literature.
- Check your supplies – do you need maps
/ posters / leaflets from the TPT Office?
- If there are large groups
of cyclists/horses they may damage the surface of the trail, especially
during wet weather. Have you taken
this into account?
What will you do to ensure no damage occurs?
- Do you need to provide
facilities en route specific to horses? What happens if a horse is
injured or loses a shoe? Will you need
watering points/troughs?
- Are there dogs on your event? If so they
should be kept under close control at all times (preferably on a
lead) and any fouling
should
be bagged and removed (participants will need to provide their
own bags).
